Fact: Men Can Breastfeed
Are you really a committed father? Though boys and men have nipples, many are unaware that they also have mammary glands. Usually there is so little mammary tissue that it is unnoticeable. However, if a man develops abnormally large mammary glands (a condition called gynecomastia), it can cause secretion of milk as well. The phenomenon of male lactation in humans has become more common in recent years due to the use of medications that stimulate a man's mammary glands.
Under the appropriate hormonal stimulus, that nature provides to human females when they become pregnant and give birth, the mammary glands of human males can also produce milk. The volume of milk produced is low relative to that of a lactating female. Male lactation is most commonly caused by hormonal treatments given to men suffering from prostate cancer. Female hormones are used to slow the production of cancerous prostate tissue, but the same hormones also stimulate the mammary glands. Male-to-female transsexuals may also produce milk due to the hormones they take to reshape their bodies. It can occasionally be a side effect of antipsychotic medication. Marijuana use is also thought by some to be a possible cause; however, published data is contradictory.Male lactation has, in some cases, commenced without hormonal treatments as well. Extreme stress combined with demanding physical activity and a shortage of food has also been known to cause male lactation. The phenomenon was first studied in survivors of the liberated Nazi concentration camps after World War II. Some American POWs returning from the Korean and Vietnam Wars also experienced male lactation. What's more, this article was published in The Mercury newspaper on October 30, 2002:
Sri Lankan widower breastfeeds his babiesCOLOMBO: A 38-year-old Sri Lankan man, whose wife had died three months ago, appears to have the ability to breastfeed his two infant daughters, doctors said on Wednesday. The man, from the central town of Walapone, lost his wife during childbirth.
"My eldest daughter refused to be fed with powdered milk liquid in the feeding bottle. I was so moved one evening and to stop her crying I offered my breast. I then realised that I was capable of breastfeeding her," the man admitted.
Dr Kamal Jayasinghe, deputy director of a Sri Lankan government hospital, was quoted as saying it was possible for men to produce milk if the prolactine hormone became hyperactive.
It's definitely worth taking look at the following cinematic statement on male breastfeeding, a short documentary film entitled "Milk Men" directed by Peter Templeman, who was nominated for this year's Academy Awards (not exactly NSFW, but it might be weird to watch it at work).

Few questions that comes to my mind with this post.
MEN: Would you breastfeed your (future) babies?
WOMEN: Would you want your husband to breastfeed your (future) babies?
ALL: What did your father say when you asked him if he did (not) breastfed you?
I remember when I breastfed my babies. My husband was so envious of the bonding. Hmm, too late now but maybe other fathers might want. Your post is so timely. Tomorrow, there will be a synchronized breastfeeding worldwide at 10AM our local tme.
I don't know about anyone else but I think the world is getting weirder by the minute! Anything is possible I guess! :)
no I wouldn't ask my dad that question and no I wouldn't feel comfortable my husband breastfeeding ..
It certainly would be interesting if men really started to do this on a widespread basis.
Women can use all the help they can get, so I'd say no problem.
I'll be interested to hear what the men say!
me: that is gross
just wrong
ilkeryoldas: [smile]
pre-conceptions?
me: i dunno, but for now i say it's wrong
if my wife died, i'll first resort to bottled milk
knock on wood

ilkeryoldas: what s/he doesnt drink bottled or powder milk?
*if
me: then i guess i'd do it
if there's no other way
lol @ icon512.. that's another way to share your thoughts, yes! =)
Breastfeeding is an incredible bonding experience for mother and child. I wouldn't want to begrudge that experience from a father (my husband), if he chose to do this... but that selfish part of me liked that special bond that only I shared with my baby son...knowing that he would share a special bond with his dad later in life, which he does... :)
OK!so a mother can be substituted by father sometimes for breastfeeding then.
i as a male think, its kind of awkard breastfeeding. and yes my dad's asleep so i can't ask him at the moment.
by the way, got this Youtube video, check it out here:

This seems perfectly normal to me, just like the fact that there are muscle women. I think it is stupid that americans(or others) think it is weird because they are bound by the stupid american male stereotype.I am sure that in sri lanka it is not seen as weird but as normal because this is what they have to do to survive. As for me I am not close to my father at all and he never breastfed me (heck he hardly even talks to me!). so i wish that fathers would do this for their kids because it is a painful thing to live in a house with a guy you have been with for 19 years and you don't even know him.
I know some dads that tried breastfeeding to keep quite kids when there is no real mom around. I had tried myself as a desperate move to stop the crying, but it didn't seems to work. The mom is the mom. I think real milky nipple is a much more better experience for babies, natural and simple. Why we need some more?
I know that men have that *instint* of breastfeed...
Becasuse I saw that in a joung men .. he try to give his chest.
I think its very very very cute.. and tender...
all the men have to do that.. because its very cute...
:)
Hmmm I feel guilty saying that it seems weird to me, but really I think.. GREAT! I have ran into several friends (male)that express that they wish they could nurse, or they wonder about it. I will have to ask my husband what he thinks about it. Unfortunately, or I guess fortunately (because the macho and manly is what women find attractive), men are macho and they aren't 'supposed' to feel those urges and soft feelings. Thats what kept the lions from our cave doors. Now a days, its ok, go ahead let your hair down, and your breast out? Power to you, from a mother of 4. Your friends might find it uncomfortable, but hey, now you know how we feel!! Bring out the park bench!!
no i wont breastfeed my future babies n i surely not ask my father about this
I'm skeptical. I don't see anything wrong with it. But I can tell you this. If men make milk, gay men would have been getting mouthfuls for decades -- at least! And we'd already know about it. Now, using a man as a pacifier... who doesn't!
I read one link on the internet about male lactation that had 2 bible quotes one from Moses referring to nursing mother and nursing father. I think that back in the golden days that this was probably not all that unusual. It's probably Mothernature's back up system for orphans, because if a woman with out child lets a baby suckle every 2-3 hours she will after a few days produce milk. So it makes sense that a man would as well. My husband says that he ended up leaking from his breasts when he was in the army before he met me in the unit, relating to the story of concentration camps, I know my husband was on a strict diet of beer, little food, and lots of exercise that the good old uncle sam put us through. Why men would lactate in a situation like that who knows, but c'mon guys God gave you nipples for a reason.
ok i'm 36 single i picked up a breast pump thinking i was gonna get married, after the relationship did not work out. i got currious i started holding the pump to my breasts. after stimulating the breast tissue i was leaky not sure if it was male latation or what but its kinda cool still have to woek on it to get a certain amount but its cool + i get bored fast
I am mother 4 kids under 2years old.Ihave twins boys 11 months old and 1 month old twin girls.my husband wanted to help me.so he decided to breastfeed our babies in our home.IT took while for it took work we started with breastpump for 2 weeks 20 minutes day.before you know it was breastfeding our boys he loves it.he wanted help me by take some load off me.we both breastfed our babies at the same time.our boys basicly take the bottle and girls take the breast.my husband loves breastfeding when he gets a chance.but do most of feeding so he can play with the boys do the housework whie spend time with our girls.

I have a question my wife is a career woman, and i'm disabled so i am stay at home father, she is getting ready to have our first child. my question to you is if I may ask, it just took 2 week 20 minutes a day, for your husband to start lactating? i'm pumping every 5 hours on the dot i'm seriously thinking about doing this, i told my wife already and shes all for it. Another question? did your husband use both breasts or just 1 I ask because i have noticed my right breast on my dominant side is getting bigger but my nipple on my left breast is also getting bigger , i heard it is possable for this to happen. is it true if i do start lacting, when the baby goes to formual, my breast or breasts will return to normal? hope you can help me find answers to my question thanks and god bless
If my husband wanted to try breastfeeding I would encourage him. I don't think it's that weird, really. It makes sense that nature would have a back-up plan.
But I'm pretty sure my husband wouldn't want to try it unless there was some real need. I will mention the possibility to him and see what he says, I'm curious. Sometimes he's more openminded about certain things.
I'd still prefer to be the primary breastfeeder in the family!
I'm quite sure that my father never tried it. Too bad, maybe we would have bonded better. As someone else said, I'd like it if my dad would be able to talk to me, let alone breastfeed!
Althoug this i a little bizarre for me it hapenned to me, I have 30 years old and since i remember all my entire life i describe myself as fetish of breastfeeding and all my past of masturbation allways had the tendence of stimulating my niples tinking in breastfeed and yes i leaked few times and for me that was cool but now i got the problem because i formed little breast with erected niples and I'm not married that's why is embarrasing when i want to take out my shirt off in front of people. I guess i did this bad to myself but i couldn't avoided
as toward an earlier comment about the ''american attitude'' my husband is latino, and i asked my friends from england, bangladesh, egypt, saint lucia, australia, india, and japan... and they all said the same thing ''weird'' so its not ''you silly americans'' thing. i personally have teased my husband about nursing our daughter, and tried to convince him to try *of course i was teasing but i wouldnt mind much* i think it is weird but i understand when it is necessary. i'm nursing our 3 month old right now, and the bond is so strong, she hates being with anyone else. though it's tiresome for me, when it doesnt exaust me, i love it. but my husband sees my exaustion and doesnt want that strong bond if it comes with no energy, lol. bottom line, it doesnt matter your country or culture really. it's simple. men do not NATURALLY breastfeed in any country without some kinda extreme situation or hormonal stimulation. but some people are open to it, and some are not, everywhere. i think it is really weird but im not closed to it. but i dont like the idea of seeing a guy bfing in public, that's just pushing it too much.
It was rather interesting for me to read that article. Thank author for it. I like such topics and everything connected to this matter. I would like to read a bit more on that blog soon.
I don't mind sleeping at night. Hence, I support without envy my wife!
Don't stop posting such themes. I like to read blogs like this. Just add some pics :)
As a WOMAN, I breastfeed my 10 month old and I BFed my daughter for 16 months. I think that those who would do this under any circumstances other than medical necessity are really weird! My husband WORKS, and has a penis, so I think it is completely inappropriate for him to breastfeed. He agrees!!
The males of the Aka people in Central Africa does it - why shouldn't we encourage it in a society that prides itself of working towards equality between sexes? It's more natural than formula, and few seem to have problems with that, even though it's proven fact that breastfed children are both more intelligent and healthy than bottlefed.

I am sorry, God mad womens breast to breastfeed. That is for the woman to do. This world is not gettig any better. I am not surprise!!!!!!!!!!
I will happily breastfeed my babies. Now that I am more aware of this, I want to make it happen! It would be so great! I am all for equality in our world, and if men have the equipment for this, why not?
Sorry if I'm taking it too far, but to me this is like female ejaculation. Women are capable of producing fluids just like the ones that mix with sperm. Female ejaculation is not well known, but most can do it with effort. Just like male lactation!
Really, go look up female ejaculation. Change your life. Thank me later.
