Show Your Support For Topless Women
How come I didn't think about it before? In my previous post, Support Topless Women (SFW), I brought to your attention that some states in the US allow women to be topless and feed their babies in public without getting arrested. This seems strange when men can walk around topless, legally, while certainly their breasts do not serve for breastfeeding. I think women must have equal rights as men and given the choice whether or not they want to use this right.
It is a little known fact that during the 80s, there were a series of arrests made for breastfeeding in public, so much so that there is a lawyer who has devoted her career to making sure that breastfeeding women can get justice in court. Like I said before, we can change the law, but the cultural half of the equation is much more challenging to change.Nudity shouldn't be outlawed, especially on a gender discriminatory basis as it is when it comes to women's breasts. However, this idea will only be accepted when the sexual stigma can be separated from the true nature of female mammary glands. The bellow is not necessarily my opinion. Is how I know people will see things.
Woman`s breast allways will have sexual conotation, except if the particular "she" and/or her breast are not way way far from being attractive.
People deep behind this project know that. And rants for "woman rights" are ALLWAYS far too exposed related to what is in reality.
There are things who everybody know but noone remember:
Woman breast feeding is something VERY EASYLY can be done in private.
Woman breast will allways have sexual conotations.
Woman rights equality with mans is just a blow in the wind.
I`m gonna give you just one hint :
When first gulf war start, all was ok. In a end, world started to say louder and louder "STOP ! ENOUGH !". Thru a miracle, that time a big-worldwide issue explode in face of public : homosexual rights for a same-sex-marriage-legality. The issue was somehow solved. Not.
But kept the headlines enough time to distract attention from REAL things going on outthere.
"True nature of mammary glands" ???? Oh, c`mon ... Check a human anatomy atlas : both genders breasts HAVE "hot" surfaces, far larger surfaces and more sensible at woman. Is not me saying, is scientists.
I`m not a "big guy", but I may be influential in certain places. I`ll never support a "free topless" campaign for "breast feeding" as unique reason. If I`ll do, all people I know will tell me I`m hypocrite.
But I`ll support any "Make breast feeding in public be legal" campaign.
Wanna bet that TERA campaign initiators wil never change them minds ?
Becouse one (very easy) is to change the campaign name and stick to it; other (impossible) is to change the real reasons for a campaign was launch ...

@Valentin: How do you expect a "Make breast feeding in public be legal" campaign to work without first doing "Make breast exposure in public be legal" campaign?
If you watch National Geographics, you will find that men who grow up with women constantly exposing their breasts don't find them sexual at all.
I think it's a childish excuse for men to say "Oh, your breasts are sexual so you must cover it." This was the same argument years ago when women were expected to cover their belly, legs...etc.

I don't believe it is a strong argument to claim this is a women's equality issue, or a women's rights issue. This is a cultural mores issue. In the U.S. at least, people are still too uptight sexually to be open to topless women in the streets.
To say something is a women's issue is to imply that a majority of women are in favor of the issue. I believe in New York state the majority of women still wear shirts when walking around outside. I believe this is also true of men.
The danger of selling something as a particular group issue is that the issue becomes instantly polarized. If one side of the argument claims that as long as one woman desires the equality of a man to go shirtless, then it should be legal, then the other side of the argument will counter with, as long as there is one person who finds women's breasts sexually explicit, then that person's right not to be exposed to them in public should be maintained.
This argument has to be taken to its logical extension, that any form of public nudity should be legal. As long as there is any form of sexual connotation in society with women's breasts, then it begs the question of what is wrong with a male penis, or a women's vagina. Until the argument goes that far, then courts will see the shortcomings and overturn any progress made.
I would be in favor of legal public nudity, but not limitations of the argument. Limiting the argument is like poking a stick in a hornets nest to see what happens. It doesn't make sense to me.
As far a public breast-feeding, that is fine as long as it is actually done in a public place. All the examples that I have seen have been women complaining that they couldn't breast-feed in private establishments.
If business establishment owners don't want women to breast-feed in their place of business, then women should respect that. It's just like if I didn't want someone to do something in my private home; I ask them to leave. I guess if I know you I wouldn't mind you breast-feeding in my home.
This isn't any different than people getting upset when parents bring young children to a fancy restaurant. People don't pay a bunch of money to have to deal with other people's brats. So why should the public have to put up with feeding the younglings in private establishments? I don't think Borders book store or Wal-Mart would look kindly on someone breaking out a picnic on aisle 5, so why is a little baby's lunch any different?
Going back to the previous argument and the silliness of making something a sexism issue: why can't a man then have someone suck on his nipple in public without it disturbing others? It's really not the same thing, huh?
Public nudity = yes.
Mothers and parents (whether public nudity is legal or not), go find a park bench, whether you’re breast-feeding, bottle feeding, or got a pic-a-nic basket.
@Greg: I like the way you think. While I'm sure there will be others to respond your comment, I just have to bring to your attention that your advice to mothers about finding a bench and breast feeding their babies in peace might not always be possible as the conversation along with this photo (NSFW) illustrates.

Men who grow up in a woman community are 99% efeminated.
I know the late tendency to diminish sexuality of view. Is a general practice, softly usually, stronger now.
I`m not against, to be remembered, I`m far from being a puritan. But also I will never backup this, as is a fake. "Back in `80`s' ... we are 20 years later ....
There is totaly no connection between breast show and breast feeding.
First is allmost everywhere legal (as on beaches, inside private properties parties, wearing seethru and so on), except the ultra-religious countries (where that`s still happening, but only on closed circles, usually for top leaders).
Second one is totaly unsexual and can be easyly avoided be in public.
As for becoming a usual thing, topless womans, there will be need for many many generations, while this will cut off up to 50% from pleasure of genders "interactivities" :-P
Q : what is similar for toy trains and woman`s breasts ?
A : both are meant for young childrens, but are more used by adult men.
The act of showing breast is a sexual behaviour.
The act of feeding a child is an intimate act.
TERA "play" for breast show up anytime-anywhere as long term goal. To reach there, they use the masonian policy of "one bridge at the time".
As a man, I have nothing against to make topless-rights-for-woman. Promoters of this would have think first to dangers a woman is exposed while laws can`t put predators away. Did they think of that ? I bet not.

Woman`s femininity rely on woman`s body curves. That imply breast too. No problem against both genders topless, but the sexual conotation of woman breast should stay where it is, or woman will have to loose (as fewer men will be "able" to find them attractive, if you understand what I mean :-P ).
However. TERA site is backlinked by several places.
One is labrujulaverde, a site which recently was outputting 3-6 trojans in users computers.

A few minutes of search and most of backlinks there are outdated, most recent march and before. Not surprising while on TERA main page they say they go on vacation ..
2007 June 17. Another woman has won damages for being arrested and seriously mistreated for being topfree in New York. The incident dates from 2005 in New York City.

Nudity and / or topless should not be outlawed, I more than agree that, but, totaly unrelated to decency or fashion, humans without clothes are lost in a natural enviorment. This is a valid rule ancestors had sent to us during tousends of years of experience.

I still think all this has to do with the way children grow up and the environment around them. Check out the video on this post and tell me your thoughts.
Years ago in New York state; along the Canadian border; I watched on local television as women left a courtroom after the 1992 decision, one removed her shirt and walked to the border bridge. She met Canadian bareshirted women in the middle of the bridge and had a group hug.
The video wasn't editted, but you could only see the back side of the woman. If I'm not mistaken I believe it was either either at the Niagara Falls location or the bridge just north of there.
Ilker: I checked out the photo and read a couple of comments on it. One comment stated a sense of shock at the comments directed at the woman breast feeding. If this is a rights issue, then people should not forget that other people have rights also, like being able to voice an opinion about something they don't approve of.
As I mentioned, a woman should be able to breast feed in public areas, but not on private property unless given permission by the owner(s).
That said, just because it may be legal for an individual to do something doesn't mean the individual should go out and do it without giving it any thought. For people to get along in society, we should have some consideration for others.
I could probably sit next to someone in a park and make annoying noises without being arrested, but I choose to use some digression and respect people enough to know others might not appreciate that.
It's similar with breast feeding. The goal is to feed the kid. So maybe a mother completely removing her shirt might seem a bit much to others nearby. The woman in the picture had her shirt completely open and didn't have twins, what's the second breast for other than the camera? My point is that mother could use the same discretion that we already use with other behavior in public. I think most mothers actually do use good discretion. It is usually just the people trying to make a point that seem to go overboard and actually hurt support for their cause.
Personally I have no problem with nudity at any level. But I don't think I'm the norm. If we don’t learn to work with others, we won’t get very far in anything we do.
I watched an episode on Dr. Phil about breastfeeding in public and non bra wearing women.
It was really fascinating to notice that the handful of women who appeared on the show expressing outrage at breast baring women were repeating the same thing over and over... "It's unattractive", "It's nasty", "I don't want to see that."
It was also really interesting (to me) that the same few women were each primped to the rafters with foundation, both cosmetic and undergarment.
They had erased almost anything and everything "natural" about their own appearances. Lip liner, eye liner, shadow, blush, lipstick. Not a wayward freckle or strand of hair between them.
I bet if you were to open their medicine cabinets you would find all sorts of anti aging tonics lotions and masks. Under their sinks the latest in hair removal technology, in their fridges diet pop (oxy moron right there) slim fasts and lean cuisines.
And on their bookshelves? I highly doubt you'll find copies of the beauty myth, or women who run with wolves. Lots of cosmo though.
On the other hand, the women advocating public breast feeding could not seem to wrap their heads around these other women's objections.
What's unnattractive? What's obscene? Why should we censor ourselves to please your not wishing to see that?
In addition, the bewildered women, unlike the angry women, had glowing, natural skin not caked with translucent powder. They looked relaxed and healthy, unlike the other group.
It was as clear as day to me, the women on that show who found breasts to be obscene, unattractive and shameful also exhibited self shame and unhappiness over their own appearances. And they weren't the least bit aware of the irony of their situations.
It really illustrated for me, how beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
As to Valentin's assertation that women's breasts will always have a sexual connotation, I suggest he learn about other cultures than his own.

And when she told them that in our culture men are fascinated with breasts there was an instant of shock. The women burst out laughing. They laughed so hard, they fell on the floor. They said, "You mean, men act like babies?"

I think it's all a matter of time. 100 years ago women didn't show their arms or ankles in public. In the late 1960's we had the topless swimsuit that wasn't accepted. In the 1970's it was the see thru blouse a short lived trend. Then the bare midrift came and went. I think it (going topless) could eventually be accepted, but not until there's more funding of mental health. Too many rapists and perverts out there, in addition to a society that's becoming ever hostile.
Oh and one last thing. Those of you in your 50's or older (and I'm talking about men as well as women) keep your shirt on.
I really have no issue with it but I don't think the US will ever come around on this. We're too uptight.
Great job ilker! I think it's absolutely absurd that women are not legally allowed to go shirtless if they want to. It's another one of those bullshit double standards that started way back when men were deciding for everyone else what is right and wrong and what is "sinful" and what is not sinful.
But the sad fact is that most of these types of decisions (many of them obviously religiously based) were made based on a total lack of facts and understanding. In addition, they were made and enacted as a form of social/moral/religious "control" with the sole purpose of preserving what was "perceived" by the few in power to be the correct, moral and righteous way to live. Example: The Puritans.
I won't get into a whole sociological/anthropological rant here (my majors in college). The bottom line is that it's absurd to live by these old, baseless ideologies when we should know better.
And for those who think a nursing mother can just quickly hide, or find some place out of the way to nurse her baby obviously has NO CLUE what it's like. And how the hell would you like it if you had to go hide somewhere every time you ate your meal? So why the hell should an innocent baby have to?! It's ridiculous.
And I'm sorry, but a topless woman can be no more unappealing than many of the men we see walking around with their shirts off. So that argument is baseless. Bottom line, if I can take my shirt off then a woman should be able to take hers off too if she wants. And if a person can't bare to see a topless woman, or one who is breastfeeding her child, then I suggest breaking the pill in half next time.

I was actually shocked to read that in many states in the US one can be arrested for public breast feeding!! In Denmark - where I come from - it's the most natural thing in the world to breast feed in public! Once again I'm grateful for growing up in a country like Denmark. Especially with that Bush person in the US. Did you know that about half of the people in Denmark think that Bush is the no. 1 threat against world peace? I can't help mentioning this here. Why others seem to make this issue so difficult. I like to simplify things, and so if I have the power to decide what should be done about women topless in public... I say go right ahead.
It's simple, if a man like me can be topless, ya the women can too. If we make the women to cover their top, ya we men have too.
What make you think when women see men topless, they not think of sex? So why do we allow men to be topless?
In truth, I rather have the topless design posts, meaning just like the smoking areas, if you see a sign says you can be topless here, or you cannot be topless here, the bystanders, the passersby, and the rest of us should respect and follow what the sign says.
So smoking cigarette in the dedicated posts meaning it's legal to do so, we should have the same thing goes for topless men and women.

In Austin it's actually legal for women to go topless, though most chose not to simply because of the idiotic harassment of the men around them...but it's still legal! Here's to Austin! :)

I support women's topless rights 100%, eventhough it is not tolerated at all in my community since my community is a Muslim one.
Women in Kerala in India were topless untill India became independant. They were actually fighting for the freedom to cover themselves. So the question is: do women want the freedom to be just to be topless/covered or do they want to be seen topless and admired. Lets have more of the latter
I see no difference in a half naked woman walking around vrs a half naked man once it becomes common place. Currently I think it would surprise me but it certainly wouldn't offend me any more than a shirtless man. To be fair there are representatives from both sexes that I would rather they keep their shirt on, yet I still think they ought to be allowed to be shirtless without getting arrested.

Can you give me any legal advise or url's where I can find info on this...My neighbor put cameras facing my property which is surrounded by 6-ft fences (on a post attached to the fence at the boarder of our properties facing my home)...In response, I lifted my shirt and exposed my breasts to him and the camera so he had something to look at...He called the police and they informed me I will be getting a summons in the mail for indecent exposure....I informed them I am on private property surrounded by 6 ft fences and if they dont like it dont face a camera onto my property...They can go topless, why is it indecent if I do...Besides I've been told my breasts are pretty decent ...LOL.. I also asked them to enlighten me as to what part of my breast was indecent, was it the nipple I needed to cover or the fat surrounding it? The Sargeant said all of it. I replied if a 400 lb fat man with breasts hanging down to his big fat stomach had no shirt on it would be legal but I would find it very offensive and indecent...So I guess it's pretty subjective and depends on what side of the fence you are on... pun intended...One of the officers said you didn’t just do it once, you did it twice (he was actually amused) I replied, well I have two breasts so I wanted to make sure he saw them both (with a smirk on my face)… I then asked the officers if you look over my fence, are you invading my privacy? Are you stalking me, or am I being indecent? Any thoughts
If he put camera's facing your property, then isn't he at fault in the first place? It shouldn't even be a big deal anyway, It's amazing how the police would waste their time on that kind thing.
Personally I think that if I can walk around without a shirt on, girls should be able to. I guess the reason people consider it so rude is because of absurd values of what's supposed to right and decent. Back in the Victorian Era it was considered rude to expose your arms or legs and in many countries it's not a problem for a girl to show her breasts.
I wish people would just stop trying to push there own values onto other people.

Can a woman who has had a sex change to become a man go topless?
If a man gets breast implants is it against the law for him to go topless in public?
Is it fair that a woman who feeds her child by the bottle can do it openly but a woman who feeds by the breast in public is scorned as shameless?
Shouldn't we be encouraging breastfeeding as the healthiest choice?
I breastfeed wherever I want and I would remove my shirt too when hot if the law did not stop me.
