Okay what do they mean when they say time travel? Do I just go back in time? or do I go back in time and find all the people who have passed away alive again? and just re-live old days?
Either way, I don't think it's possible.
the way this guy is breaking it down you can only travel back as far as when the machine is turned on and there is no telling what will happen after you turn it on. He is basicaly saying that a time machine is like tivo.
"What happed today happend yesterday, and will happen again tomorrow," quoth Spinoza. In other words, your dish of dogfood was there today, was there yesterday and will be there again tomorrow.
Slowing down one's personal perception of time is possible by both high speed travel and by moving in and out of the event horizon of a black hole but neither of these things are currently possible.
There is an excellent video here that explains the dimension of time and the reality of time travel.
Thought you might enjoy it :)
Big claims, no proof, sounds like a simplistic scifi novel, hard to believe.
The type of time travel they are talking about is one where you just slow down. You're not just sitting there and pop up in another time period. You simple are going so fast that time moves slower for you. Everyone else who isn't traveling that fast is moving at normal speed in time. The only way, though, to really have a marked affect on your life in regards to time travel (where you would see actual futures) is if you could travel above the speed of light. Theoretically that is impossible, so seeing far futures by going so fast that you move very little time wise will probably never happen so long as we live as a species.
The only thing I didn't like in it was the use of those 2 mirror/photon thing. It's obviously fake and no such device could exist to serve the purpose they are talking about. The mirrors are flat, so when you move the mirror the light wouldn't hit he center, it would either hit somewhere off to the side because you've changed the mirror position, or it wouldn't hit at all. It's an interesting way to explain, but they could just use a normal clock to show. They could use evidence from jet fighter flights to show the difference between clock times after speed experiments...
Is there a relation between 3-dimensional space and time (= 4th dimension) ?
Of course time travel is possible!
We're traveling through time, all the time!
(We're just not remaining the same as we travel. ;-))
Asking an Answer ;)))?
Look I've been desparately in need of someone who has knowledge in physics to let them know how time travel works....because fortunately or even unfortunately, I've found the solution. Please respond.
Musirio,
Would you like to share the solution you found with all of us?
Is time travel possible? - ask Sierra Waters
Here's one for a sci-fi movie that would be kind of halarious. Go east and you'll be in a different time zone right? 4:00 will be 5:00! So keep going east until your in the same spot again and it'll be 4:00 the next day! Go West and you'll go back in time! Is that the way Superman did it?
You dont need to reach lightspeed to Time Travel, As proven in the jet fighter flights. You just need to get to about Mach 20 or faster depending on how far you would want to travel.
The speed creates a sort of time slowening bubble as the protons takes more time to travel. So your bubble slows down and the world seems to be traveling faster.
Who knows 20 minutes at mach 20 could mean 20days in real time.
Alhough I'd sugest you take the trip in space as the earth moves quite a bit when time traviling. You dont want the earth to com crashing in to you or ending up in space without fuel or oxygen for that matter.
Time travel is impossible people!
BTW, flying at MACH 20 even for a year you might only get a few seconds difference. Why is it impossible? Who says time is something you "travel" anyways? Time is actually = change; you can have more change (faster time) or less change (slower time) or no change (no time) but you can't have negative change (makes no sense.)
Sorry dreamers, it just ain't so!
Time travel cannot yet be achieved with present technology using current theories. But because we are dealing with time, we are also dealing with the future which has always been full of unimaginable possibilities.
Lots of people dismiss time travel without really understanding the science behind it. Admittedly, this is because we don't have the answers right now. They seem too incredible.
However, it takes imagination to conceive the incredible. Science has a way of changing what "improbable" and "impossible" is given time, a willing mind, and some action.
I suggest a more open mind:

Maybe this is the reason we're not overrun by tourists from the future. They want to do it at a certain and set time.

I am a Time traveler from the Future I have but very little time in this time period as the food and water make me sick.
I am lucky to have met other time travelers from others universe that put me in touch with Organic farmers.

Im a real time traveler like John Titor my names is James smith but im from the year 2043 i know some of you wont believing me but its true every word i invented a computer program kinda like your chatting messenger called msn i created the program in 2020 named Time Travel Messenger it enables users to chat to people in the future kinda like your msn but insted you can chat to people in the future i came back to warn you about the rough times a head & yes something does happens in 2012 im not able to tell you what it is all tho the earth does survive very well i came here to tell you how to salve the government thats falling apart it does get salved in late 2011 everything is put into one united world bank its the only way to save the economy & the united nations in the usa changes its name to United populated planet other wise nick name UPP we need this one world bank all countries working together to stabilize the falling apart economy & all your apple & pc fans out there i got good news Apple & windows become brothers all in one operating system it enables the user to use all programs weather its mac based program or a windows based program & the operating system is named WinMac Os i hope this info is successful & im not a guy just trying to make millions out of this i have a good paying job since after i invented that software Time Travel Messenger anyways i gotta go now back to 2043 take care now i hope you make the right choices im a little nervous at posting this because this could alternate the future by doing this but i hope its for the better i gotta go my times up here bye bye
my theory on time is that its man made... theres no real line persay that is time its just a bunch of numbers that help people plan ahead but theres no real point in planning ahead when anything could change and that plan could be ruined, i see it as its always now and wether now is 50 BC or 2009 AD its still whats going on its life as we know it. the past is all just a memory so technically if you wanna go into the past you could virtually through memory with the right technology. the future hasnt happened yet and every decision changes between what we know as now and thats what makes it the now of a "later point in time" or the future.. so anyone whos all caught up and obcessed with time travel all the more power to yah if you somehow find out time is more than just a man made theory but i personally wouldnt get all caught up on it cuz theres more to life than changing the past or knowing the future just live your life and move on...
This is how i see time travel...
Time is only understood by humans with the understanding about the space between 1 moment in time between another for example 1ms, 1 sec, 1 minute, or even 1 hour is the lapse in time that we can find relevance. However what if this is not the case? What if time is much different? Time is generally thought to be considered part of the speed of light or c constant. Nothing is considered to be faster than the speed of light, however if there were it would be considered to go backwards in time. How is this possible if time relative to me is going forward.
Let me give you an example:
Lets just say we can send a particle out at faster than the speed of light, we’ll call this particle x. If x is sent out by observer1 to observer2. Since sight and sound cannot travel this fast observer 2 can visually see that they had received particle x before observer1 even sent it. But this is just an observation since it takes more time for the light to hit the observers eye, than it took to receive particle x. This can be construed as Time Travel. How is that when observer2 never “traveled through time.” if the same amount of time had passed for both observer1 and observer2.
if a particle could be sent so fast to create a Time Paradox. The Speed of the particle would have to be that the amount of Time to go back * the speed of light.
Lets get numbers down here for you to see now.
Let’s say we want to create a paradox 20 seconds ago.
the constant speed of light is 299,792,458 m/s
so there’s a distance of 5,995,849,160 meters
1 meter = 0.000621371192 miles.
that gives you a distance of 3725647.93960139872 miles
lets round that up to 3725648 miles.
the earth is about 236715.5 miles from the moon.
This particle would have to travel to the moon and back about 15.75 times.
a particle would have to go over 20 times the speed of light to see the light that was omitted 20 seconds ago, but would nowhere be near the source of the omitted light. even if the light that was omitted 20 secs ago was powerful enough to be seen. That particle would only effect the light we omitted 20 secs ago, and not us in our current time/reality.
OK I received a message, but where did it come from...
I set up 2 mirrors 1 meter apart turned on my monitoring equipment, and finished setting up my test. then pressed the big red button and sent my faster than light particle, but nothing happens. I check my equipment and it says that i received the message at zero seconds. This is because any monitoring equipment cannot refresh faster than that of the speed of light. It will read as if I sent the message at the same Time I received it.
Time is what it is. Nothing but a time period of Time 1 point to the Time 2 point relative to our observation of it. You cannot go back, you can observe constantly the light being omitted.
“Time traveling” would be the observation of these points in an other than normal fashion. Speeding ahead of the relative light that you are reflecting, or omitting at this very “time.” would be considered going back in time. Because you would be observing the light that you omitted before your relative now. being able to observer more light than being omitted would be considered traveling ahead in time. However since light is “omitted” constantly there is no way to observe more light during the same amount of time.
Regardless of what the Big wigs say, you can change the past as much as you want, changing this past has no effect on you. your experiencing time as it is. Since you cannot speed ahead into the future you can only observe at the normal speed of light velocity. Because this is your realities Future nothing you do to the “past” light will have any effect on you.
so until time can be observed on a different plane then “light”, time travel is not possible. Humans will never be able to observe time travel due to this limitation. The only observation that our brain can comprehend is electronic pulses, which cannot be faster than the speed of light, sent to the light processing part of our brain.
It is my understanding that matter can neither be created nor destroyed. Assuming time travel is possible (sending an individual backward or forward in time); would it not be true that the matter that makes up the individuals body or made up the body would exist in the same time that the individual has traveled to? Adding or "creating" new matter to or in the universe.
I hope I have all my tenses right. It seems that practicalities of time travel defy what has ever been presented in science fiction. I fear that only information, not matter itself could travel through time.
Such silly nonsense. Of course going back in time is impossible. It's an exercise in meaninglessness! First of all, who says time is something that you "can travel" anyways? Time is simply change; nothing more and nothing less. You can't travel change, can you?
For example, you can have more change (like time "speeds" up), less change (like time "slows" down), or no change (like time stays "still"), but you can't have negative change. This keeps in line with relativity, time dilation, etc.
I hope that clears things up. Also, even if the "alternate universe" theory is correct (which I HIGHLY doubt) you would still NOT be traveling to the past through time; instead, you would be traveling to alternate universes. Also, c is the universal speed limit...it is the speed of time! Once you reach c you will have used up all of the available time in the universe!
This video is so confusing, but I loved it! I'll be thinking about this all night. It'll seem like I'm moving at the speed of light. No, wait...
this video was in treging but the theory of time travel is 999,999,999,999,999,999,999 times over unlickly even, if posible, if you went back into time and changed something then back into the present if you stopped it from happening the why did you go back in time to stop somthing that never happened so you never do go back in time and it happens any ways. Come on if a 12 year old child from Roanoke, Al can figure this crap out why the hell can't A trained physeologist who graduated with top honors, and I'm only in the 7th grade. the fact that u r a 7th grader means your ability of understanding is too low to be in thisconversation -nothing personal, im only 14- the idea that it is possible to time travel originated with einsteins theory that the speed of light and time are directly related and that the space-time continum is not a constant. this means that the rate of time traveling forward can be altered.
this means that if u travel at the speed of light, time will stand still and if u do so for long enough once u have stopped moving u will have note aged but u will be in the future. to travel back in time u will have to travle past the speed of light- E=MC2 mean that traveling back in time is not possible.
Great video. Not sure I understand it entirely. It occurred to me that something I'm involved in would be better than time travel...for certain people who might want to change their own past. You'll have to visit my web page and judge for yourself.
I know a time traveller named Michaelmatician. More info about him at my blog.

The very presence of neuroscience information might be seen as a surrogate marker of a good explanation, regardless of what is actually said.
