You can read the story behind the girl from the photographer's own words in Meditation Photography and see the first post of Pictures Worth A Thousand Words.

just awful, such a beautiful child succumbing to a wretched disease
HIV positive - hope negative. Makes me stop and think.
Unbelievably tragic. Such dull haunting pain in her eyes. I there was some way to comfort her.
This issue is close to my heart. It's so very sad.
Please feel free to link to me and I will look for the name of the photographer of the photo you saw on my blog and also send you links to some others I have collected that you may like.
IT makes me wish I could snap my fingers and make the world better. It should make everyone stop and think.
She really is a Beautiful little girl & it's sad to see she is burdened with such a dreadful disease*
She reminds me of that Iconic image from National Graphic magazine of the Girl with the haunting Eyes from Afghanistan? i think*
Thanks ilker for bringing attention to HIV AIDS*
The scientific community seem to be making great strides in coming up with hopefully a Cure & perhaps a Preventative Vaccine & also Drugs that allow those currently Living with HIV to lead a Healthy productive Long Life*

I don't need a Thousand Words...just "sad."
My first thought when I saw the photo was...
How cute! Did she just ate something that messes up her face?
..until I read the article. :(
Very powerful post, thank you for helping raise awareness on the this dreadful virus.
saw her on LinkedTv sometime back in a program! very disheartening..
@BillyWarhol - yes, i thought that too - that woman from Afganistan :) the photographer had found her after many many years and both of her pictures were published!! compelling stories! sad
Woke up this morning, sun's out, so looking forward to a fun day filled with reading, writing, cooking, eating, cuddling up with my man.... then this picture appears on my screen... gone is my excitement for today.
Am I angry? Do I feel my day has been spoiled?
No! I am grateful for this. Thank you, beautiful little girl, for really waking me up...
I really feel sorry for the little girl. It makes me wonder how can this happen to this innocent child. But despite of her illness you can see the spark in her eyes...
I like your blog and thanks for inspiring me.
Love & Gratitude,
Tina

That is heartbreaking. She's so beautiful.
Heck...it's a child, rgardless of appearance, it's devastating.
