Enough is Enough
I've had it with Blogspot domain name and hosting service. First off, the domain name is not fit for my blog. I received many comments from readers who were surprised to see that "the thinking blog" was nothing like Blogspot blogs they ever saw before. The hosting service is a different story and just gets on my nerve. It is unreliable with all the down times. Notice that there wasn't a post yesterday? These days owning a domain name is not difficult. However, I share the same fate as all students and cannot afford one when I need to save every penny for buying noodles. Unfortunately, that is my daily dose of food! Likewise, hosting costs another fortune and I need your help. If you could chip in even as little as $2 then hopefully I will have enough by next week (chip in ends March 8th).
For a domain name I think GoDaddy is the one to go for but I have no idea about hosting. For those who use a hosting service on their blog, which one would you recommend and why?

A good looking host I have found, and am conidering signing up with is http://www.lunarpages.com/ They have a basic package that is $7/mo that is more than adequate for most people.
Another host that looks good, and a little cheaper at $5/mo is http://www.siteground.com/
Also note, both include free Domain registration in said packages.

I like the design you've done with blogger, would you be able to do this with Wordpress, Movable Type or some other self-hosted blog system?

Yeah the graphics bit is a piece of cake. I have tried implementing the same design on a Wordpress blog and it works smoothly.
The only things that differ are the name and the number of plugins used. Couple of plugins available for WP does not have a Blogger substitute though.
I went for Blogger because I thought it would be more reliable knowing that Google is behind it and I wasn't quite sure what the deal was with downloading versions of WP back then.

Ilker, buddy... you can "crash at my place" for a little bit if you want. I own a Mosso account where I'm hosting my new blog: almostfirstreviews.com and I think I can set you up with some space. It probably can't be for ever, but you are welcome to it.
I am currently using webstrike solutions - $30 setup with no more to pay for the first 12 months. They have been good to me so far - there was a hiccup with my database and it was restored within half an hour. Servers don't appear to be over-crowded either.
HostMonster.com is pretty good as well. Customer support is very good and prices are not bad at all (starts at around $5.95 if I remember correctly).

From a customer service point of view, all of my questions and problems were answered within an hour or 2.

I use Lunarpages. So far they are really good. I haven't experience any down time or a need for their support but I'm pretty self sufficient when it comes to running my own site. Their basic package is $6.95 per month. for 250gb and 10 domains plus if you pay for a year in advance you get a free domain name. The only thing I don't like is the way they handle additionally hosted domains on your account.
A friend of mine uses Dreamhost and she likes it.
I've also used Cyberwurx and they are pretty good although towards the end of my time I was experiencing quite a few outages. Their support is excellent though and whenever I had a problem someone was always there to help me. I think their lowest plan is $4.95 but I can't remember the specks.
Go with GoDaddy if you want to be ignored, or receive a blanket email response whenever you have problems. And what service, on the internet, doesn't have problems?
I'd ask people here what the personal service of their hosting company is, and compare it with price.

A client asked us to use godaddy last year and it was a waste of time and money. I had to switch after six months.
Don't take my word for it, google 'godaddy sucks' and read for yourself.
Hey, I'll second the recommendation for Dreamhost. They are very cool and they have a TON of free stuff, plus a very sleek and useful dashboard.
I use squarespace which has been very good to me. Great customer service too!
HAHA...I like the creativity in raising funds for the new domain! Having a domain without the blogspot in it will add tons of credibility to your site for those that are not familiar with it. I think it's a great move!

I'm gonna review a guy's blog today who's doing the same thing, but he admits that now his Technorati ranking is split because he's got backlinks to his old blog address and new links to his new address.

I just use WordPress.
Design wise I'm still an amateur, but I purchased a CSS upgrade for only $15. Buying additional storage space is pretty reasonable too.

About hosting a Blogger blog through WordPress on a custom domain, I'm not sure if it is illegal. Maybe I should print the terms of agreement for Blogger, pick up my magnifying glass, and get back to you in a couple of months.
About Technorati rankings, I'm sure there would be some loss. Although, I'm not a SEO expert so don't take my word for it! Just sounds logical, you know.. new address means old links don't link there. =)

I suggest you get your domain and hosting through bluhost.com.
Highly recommend it, and they have fantastico, so it takes one minute to get a wordpress blog installed.
But blogspot doesn't have an export feature that I know of. So if you figure out a decent way to migrate everything, please post it here.

I recently switched to GoDaddy's deluxe hosting plan. The specs are in Jean's comment. I ended up getting a year worth of hosting for around $60 on some special. So far, their service has been great. Their telephone support team has answered all of my questions quickly and efficiently.
I previously used Yahoo Webhosting, and I don't recommend them at all. I had a lot of problems with them. Plus, they're expensive.

Ok, use Bluehost. There is an affiliate link on my site on the side...it is there not because I monetize a whole lot but because I truly believe in them...go to my site and you will see my monetizing is a total of 3 links. I don't do hardly any...and I have to truly believe in you to get in there.
That said..you get a free domain when you sign up with them. You also get the great rate of $6.95 per month although you do pay yearly.
On top of this..they have live chat. That answers immediately. Click my link and test them. I bet you get someone....I always do and I am not expert on here believe me. I am getting smarter, but far from expert.
On top of this...installing Wordpress is like 2 mouse button clicks...
I started out on Netrillium long long ago back when they were good. I then took a break from maintaining a blog outside of myspace. When I decided to start back up again I got so excited I didn't take the time to research for a new host and jumped right back with Netrillium. After getting fed up I actually looked into a good host and decided to go with Hostgator.com. A month ago I signed up for a resller account and it's been nothing but bliss. :) Great uptime, fast servers... the whole package!
Since you now have a .com domain, I'm assuming you're done asking for suggestions, but 1&1 (I used the 6 month free trial) seems decent as well as Globat and GoDaddy (according to friends).
But anyway, I didn't know you were a student! Post-secondary I'm assuming. I'll be in University next year too :D
Also how do you make layout changes in Wordpress? I tried moving my blog to Wordpress but it seems you have to pay to change the CSS. Is there another way to do it?
