Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art developed initially by African slaves in Brazil, starting in the colonial period. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuge, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Technique and strategy are the key elements to playing a good game. Capoeira has two main styles, known as "regional" and "Angola." Although groups of one style do exist, most groups tend to mix the two styles to some degree.

To give you an idea, watch Grupo Muzenza from Brazil, or the beginning and ending scene of Only the Strong; a 1993 action film that is considered to be the only Hollywood film that showcases Capoeira from beginning to end.

If you would like more information on Capoeira history, mestres, moves and best of all: links to groups where you can practice Capoeira in your own city, then is a good place to start.

PS. Also note that the only computer game dedicated to this art is Capoeira Fighter!
